Astra Sharma
Perth-born Astra Sharma might only be 23, but she’s already carved out an impressive start to her senior career. Born in Singapore, she represents Australia and has already reached as high as 160th on the WTA Singles rankings. So far, she’s picked up an impressive five title wins at ITF level, and looks set to do even more in the future.
In 2019, though, she really made a huge name for herself at Mixed Doubles level. There, she paired up with John-Patrick Smith at the 2019 Australian Open. The pair eventually missed out to Barbora Krejcikoa and Rajeev Ram, losing 6-7(3-7), 1-6.
However, for Sharma, it’s a fine showcase of her very impressive skills – and her growth. Winning her first trophy in July 2015, against Ola Abou Zekry in Egypt, she’s since endured a period of wins and losses. Her most recent trophy win came in September 2018, when she defeated fellow Australian Destanee Aiava in Cairns, Australia.
While the young Australian has much to do to live up to the names of some of her illustrious compatriots, she’s achieved a huge amount for one so young and very much looks set to achieve success in tennis for years to come.
