Nick Kyrgios Produces Major Shock Against Novak Djokovic

 In ATP, ATP News

For some time now, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has been one of the most consistent on the court. However, his consistency was shattered by the controversial Nick Kyrgios. The tempestuous Australian fired ahead of the Serb with one of the finest performances he’s ever put in during his career. At the Alberto Mexicano Telcel, he played an incredible 25 aces and also saved two set points to beat Novak Djokovic 7-6, 7-5.

An immensely talented player himself, Kyrgios has been let down time and time again by a poor mentality and an inability to control his temperament when it matters most. However, the big games tend to bring out the best in him, as he starts to perform at the highest level when the pressure comes on big.

With his 11th victory against a player in the Top 10 confirmed, the idea that it’s his mentality, rather than his talent, that holds him back stands strong. He’s beaten Nadal, he’s beaten Federer and he’s now beaten Djokovic. In terms of his prowess in the sporting arena, few could argue that Kyrgios is not worth discussing – his antics, though, definitely hold him back.

More wins like this, though, might just change the balance of public opinion about the talented star. Now, he’s in a semi-final for only the second time in little over a week, having reached the semi-finals of the Open 13 Marseille where he lost to Tsonga in a tough match.

In the semi-finals awaiting Kyrgios, and his mentality, is Sam Querrey. Querrey beat Dominic Thiem on the same day 6-1, 7-5, setting up a semi-final against one of the sport’s most charismatic and controversial players.

This high level of performance in recent weeks has seen many tip this to be the year of Kyrgios. Always seen as someone with immense talent and huge capability on the court, Kyrgios now has to find a way of keeping his head against an opponent he would probably expect to beat.

It’s a very interesting mind-set to have, especially for one so young. If he’s going to push on and start to gradually make his way to the top of the sport again, though, he will need to spend some time managing and improving his consistency and mentality. If this is to be his year, he’ll need to play with the same passion in the semi-final as he did against a superstar like Djokovic.
